What if eating blueberries helped you control your weight?
The health benefits of polyphenols (antioxidants), present in large quantities in blueberries, are numerous.
Recently, researchers from Laval University have shown that there is a link between controlling weight gain and the presence or absence of polyphenols in the diet. Their research shows that these polyphenols exert their action, at least in part, by modifying the intestinal microbiota.
“The blueberry polyphenols we tested reduced weight gain and improved insulin resistance in mice fed a poor quality diet. At least part of these beneficial effects is associated with the intestinal microbiota”, summarizes André Marette.
Blueberries were known to help prevent obesity and insulin resistance and it was suspected that this protective effect came from their polyphenol content.
This is what the authors report in a study recently published in the journal American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism .
